Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where are you located?
Julia Cedar Design is based in Nelson, British Columbia, in the heart of the West Kootenay region. In-studio appointments are available for fittings, alterations, and custom project consultations.
Q: How much do alterations cost?
Pricing depends on the garment and the work involved. Here are common starting points:
- Hems : $40 for dress pants · $55 for denim
- Zippers : from $90 (lined jacket) to $200+ (winter coat)
- Patches : $20 to $45 each
- Fitting & consultation : $45/hr
For custom work and upcycling projects, pricing is discussed during consultation once I understand the scope. A fitting session is always the best first step for anything complex, as it avoids surprises on both ends.

Fitting and consultation time is billed at $45/hr. For straightforward alterations like a hem or zipper, there's no separate consultation fee, the work is quoted when you bring the garment in.
Q: Do you take custom sewing commissions?
Absolutely, custom work is where this studio thrives. Julia takes commissions year-round for dresses, costumes, bags, upcycled garments, and one-of-a-kind pieces. If you're not sure whether your idea is possible, just ask. Unusual requests are welcome.
Q: What kind of alterations do you offer?
Julia offers a full range of clothing alterations: hemming, taking in or letting out seams, waist adjustments, zipper replacement, relining, and general repairs. If your garment needs care, bring it in.
Q: How long does an alteration take?
Turnaround varies by complexity. Simple hems can often be ready within a few days; more involved alterations may take one to two weeks. Timeline is always confirmed at drop-off.
